How to Practice Safe Sun

How to Practice Safe Sun

The safety of ingredients in sunscreen has become a national concern, especially during the summer months when looking to protect you and your family from harmful UV rays. There are two types of sunscreens on the market: chemical and mineral. Chemical sunscreen uses active ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate to absorb the energy of UV rays. Mineral sunscreens, including zinc and titanium dioxide, provide a physical barrier, reflecting UV rays away from the skin.

Increasingly, the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens are being linked to endocrine disruption. Oxybenzone is especially linked to harm, and evidence suggests that once absorbed, this chemical acts like estrogen in the body and is associated with endometriosis in  women along with other potential hormone-based health concerns.  The truth is, we don't know all of the long term consequences that slathering a lotion riddled with endocrine-disrupting chemicals can have on the human body. But, enough evidence exists to support avoiding this type of product. Instead, opt for mineral (zinc and titanium dioxide-based)  sunscreen to keep you safe in the sun this summer.

Here are some of my favorite MINERAL-based sunscreen products...

Beautycounter has an amazing sunscreen line for your body, face and lips.

Drunk Elephant's Umbra and Umbra tinted are both great. I especially LOVE the Umbra Tinte becuase of the added glow :)
