How to Treat Hormonal Acne Naturally

How to Treat Hormonal Acne Naturally

Hormonal acne is one of the most frustrating problems us women deal with. Unlike teenage acne, hormonal acne isn’t as easily treated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. It’s also very focused- usually appearing along the chin and jawline. So many of us struggle with annoying cystic-type bumps that pop up at the same time every month. For the longest time I resigned myself to the fact that my acne was a fact of life. My hormonal cysts were not only incredibly painful, but they also wreaked havoc on my self-confidence. No one likes having angry red cysts on their face!! Over the past few months I have started to change my diet and skincare routine to attack my hormonal imbalances at the source. Hormonal acne isn’t something that improves overnight, but here are the three most important lifestyle changes that have left me cyst-free for a full month!

Diet

The first two obvious dietary culprits are gluten and dairy. Cut both of these out while also adding in hormone-balancing foods like bone broth, dark veggies, and rooibos tea.

Topical

I recently switched to Herbivore Botanical’s Blue Tansy Oil and have found it provides great moisture while also treating oily/combination skin. An acne product with tea tree oil can also work to calm topical redness.

Supplements

I was hesitant to believe the hype about Evening Primrose Oil, but it is AMAZING. I had already adapted the above lifestyle shifts when I began taking this supplement. While my skin had improved from a new diet and skincare regimen, the evening primrose oil is what really eradicated my acne. Remember to always choose a high quality supplement brand and consult a healthcare professional before adding anything to your daily routine!
