Adaptogens 101
Never-Ending Wellness
With so many wellness products on the market, it can be difficult to distinguish what is right for you. Supplements, and specifically adaptogens, are popping up everywhere from Whole Foods, to Clean Market, and your local yoga studio. So, here is a break down of how adaptogens can benefit your health…
What are Adaptogens?
Adaptogens are a class of herbs that support your body’s ability to manage stress and can “adapt” their functionality based on your body’s specific needs. Rooted in Ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic practices, adaptogens balance the endocrine and adrenal systems and boost your body’s resilience against a myriad of stressors.
Ginseng, ashwangandha, and holy basil are herbs that can reduce the negative impacts of stress by lowering cortisol levels and managing hormone imbalances. The term “adapt” comes from the ability of these ingredients to, for instance, lower or raise estrogen levels based on the needs of an individual person. Beyond balancing hormones, different herbs can promote various aspects of overall wellness.
How can I incorporate these into my routine?
Generally, adaptogens come in pill, powder, or tincture form, and can be added to tea, milk, hot water, smoothies, and more!
What are the beauty benefits?
With your skin as the largest organ, and acne often the result of a bodily imbalance, adaptogens are a great tool to reduce inflammation and encourage a glowing complexion. My favorite ingestible adaptogen for radiant skin is Dr. Will Cole’s Holi(youth) Oceanic Adaptogen supplement, which incorporates the hero ingredients pearl powder and holy basil.
Not ready to commit to ingestibles?
Supplements aren’t for everyone! If you want to experiment with adaptogens but are unsure of where to start, Moon Juice’s new Adaptogenic Skincare line uses the same principles as supplements, but in a topical format.
Editor’s Note: Always consult your physician before adding in a new dietary supplement to your routine.
